Inclusive Conversations: Common Ground at the National Portrait Gallery, Thursday 12 November 2026
For two years, the University of Leicester’s Research Centre for Museums and Galleries and the National Portrait Gallery team have been considering the research question: ‘how do you generate displays, interpretation, and events that enable inclusive conversations?’ The project has brought together staff from across both institutions with peer experts, young people and other guests to collaborate on a series of outcomes that respond to the Gallery’s collection of photographs from the late 19th century. Two displays: 55 carte-de-visite photographs in Room 22 on Level 2 and ‘Common Ground’ in the Studio Gallery on Level -2 display the results.
A sector-specialist event on Thursday 12 November at 1pm will bring together representatives from across the project team together with the artist collaborators to talk about the project. This is free to attend, designed as a sector-facing, open and inclusive conversation. It will welcome museum and gallery professionals, academics, students, artists, and learning and engagement specialists.
