New Arrivals: Modern Figures at National Galleries Scotland
New Arrivals: Modern Figures display at Modern One, National Galleries Scotland
A fascinating selection of portraits by pioneering artists who studied and taught at Scotland’s art schools in the early 20th century forms part of a display which recently opened at Modern One, National Galleries Scotland.
The display, which features portraits by Edward Baird, Charles C. Baillie and James Cowie, showcases highlights from the gallery’s new acquisition of works from the private collection of Charlie Nairn, allocated through the HM Government Acceptance in Lieu scheme, administered by Arts Council England.
National Galleries Scotland said the acquisition “transforms the nation’s art collection, helping better represent the work of modern Scottish artists and demonstrating the important role of Scotland’s art schools”. Together, the works provide insights into the local and international contexts for Scottish art during the first decades of the 20th century. Exceptional examples of portraits within the new acquisition demonstrate in particular how artists in Scotland grappled with the enduring subject of the human figure with a fresh and unique energy.
The collector, Charlie Nairn, said: “It’s a delight to know that these paintings and drawings, which I’ve known for so many years are now being looked after by the National Galleries of Scotland for the benefit of the public.”
